2003 TRIP REPORT TO
JIMMY WOO'S ANCESTRAL VILLAGE

On June 18 2003, our TAISHAN.COM staff went on a field trip to pay respects to some of the remaining relatives living close to Jimmy Woo's (also known as Chin Siu Dek) ancestral village at the Chong Pan district in the Sanba town of Taishan.  Jimmy Woo, whose Chinese name is , taught the san-soo form of kungfu to many students in the United States.  San-soo is believed to be derived from the famous Choy-lei-fat martial arts.

Oscar Isaacson, a student of the San-Soo kungfu from the United States, gave us some money to distribute to these relatives, particularly Yu Bi Fang and Chen Shi Wu.  Yu Bi Fang is a cousin of Chin Siu Dek.  She took care of Chin Siu Dek's mother when his mother was alive.  The following pictures show her status at this time.

She is basically fine as her health is stable.  Her daughter is working in Kaiping earning about 1000 yuan (121 USD) a month.  Outside of her house is a tree which has some fruits known as "wong pei".  She was kind enough to fetch these fruits for us as shown in the following pictures.

We next walked over to Chen Shi Wu's home.  Chen Shi Wu is the son of Chin Siu Hung who was the master of Jimmy Woo.  Chin Siu Hung was taught by Chen Guan Bai, who was the son of Chen Xiang, the founder of Choi-lei-fat kung-fu.  The following link shows the lineage of this martial arts which we believed to have formed.

During our walk, we encountered a woman harvesting some winter-melons as shown in the left picture below.  Winter melons are usually harvested during the summer months as many Chinese people use it to cook soup so as to cool the heat.  Each melon is at least 20 lbs and can be as large as 40 lbs.

Yu Bi Fang also told us that recently there has been a entrepreneur who has been buying a lot of the property around this area.  Yu Bi Fang told us that he has travelled to many places around the world including Hawaii, Canada, etc. and knows martial arts well.  He was borned from this area and is now 68 years old.   It is believed that he has made his fortune in the real-estate business.  His name is Chen Jin Sheng.  His Chinese name is .  In Cantonese, his name is pronounced Chan Gam Saang.  The right picture below shows one of the properties that he recently has purchased and renovated.

Yu Bi Fang told us that Chen Jin Sheng might be able to give us some information about the martial arts history from this area.  She gave us his phone number which is +86-750-5866330.  His mobile phone is 013332820092.  We called Chen Jin Sheng that day but he was unavailable.

We finally arrived at Chen Shi Wu home and we found Chen Shi Wu to be quite healthy as he is in his late eighties.  The pictures below show his status as we interviewed him.  However, there seems to be a little swelling on his feet as shown in the right picture below.

Chen Shi Wu told us that he wasn't sure that his father, Chin Siu Hung, protected Sun Yat-Sen or Chiang kai-shek.  He doesn't have any old photos of this father.  However, his father has another name known as Chen Han Chi.  The Chinese name is and its Cantonese pronounciation is Chan Hon Chi.  This is his married name and is usually used in official documents.  As a matter of fact, the Choi-lei-fat museum in Xinhui has this name catalogued as one of the many students for the Choi-lei-fat martial arts school.  Chen Shi Wu himself also has another married name known as Chen Bao Rong.  This Chinese name is and its Cantonese pronounciation is Chan Bo Wing.

Anyway, this concludes our trip as we also gave 200 yuan (about 25 USD) to Yu Bi Fang and Chen Shi Wu each.  Both of them accepted the money and thanked Oscar for it.  When we have a chance, we shall try to contact Chen Jin Sheng to get some more martial arts history from this area.
